Welcome to the Merch Entrepreneur podcast. I am your host Elaine Heney and in this episode we are going to figure out if you need to be a graphic designer in order to make some money with Merch by Amazon.

Firstly I have to admit something, I’m not a very good designer seriously. I can make my way around Photoshop but me if I were to draw something you would probably have to guess a couple of times to actually hit upon what it was I was trying to draw which isn’t really very good. What I’ve found is actually in any of these online businesses it’s better to be more of a generalist and know bits about different things rather than just being really, really good at Graphic Design or really, really good at Keywords, or really, really good at Market Research. If you kind of have; you’re able to dabble in a couple of different things I find it’s actually a better skill set to have.

If you’re not a graphic designer, honestly don’t panic. I think actually to be honest, most of the people that I’ve talked to that are doing Merch, they may be able to design a few things if they’re really stuck but they would not call themselves graphic designers whatsoever. It was funny actually, I was at a conference there, maybe about two years ago in Vegas and one of my heroes was speaking, it was actually the first business book that I had ever really properly come across and read. It was my first time out of Australia and I was staying in this little kind of a somewhere between a house and an apartment, kind of in the middle of this really old fashioned outback town in Australia called Kombucha which is a hilarious name anyway. Apologies to any Australians listening.

I was out there and there wasn’t really much to do and it was dark at six in the evening so there was a shop for books and one of the books there was called Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki and I was like, Oh yeah, I’ll speed read through books without too many problems so I was like, okay, I’ll read that. I read the book and it completely changed how I thought. I was like oh my god, this makes so much more sense than slaving away in some kind of an office job. I don’t know how I’m going to make it work but I can see the future of the way I would like my life to be and definitely this Robert dude has got some good ideas going on.

Fast forward there to about two years ago and I ended up in a conference in Vegas and one of the speakers was Robert Kiyosaki. I was really bad. I was like an overenthusiastic fan, it was a little ridiculous, probably slightly embarrassing for the people with me. I was like, “Oh my God he’s there,” and of course, he didn’t give a [inaudible 00:03:16]. He was saying what he wanted to say, he was actually quite funny. I’ve read some of his other books as well and to be honest was a little regurgitation going on there from his first book.

Anyway, he was a very enjoyable character to listen to and definitively very comfortable on stage but the thing I heard him staying at one stage that he was talking to a lady and she was a writer of some sort and she was complaining that her book wasn’t selling. I don’t know how she ended up talking to Robert Kiyosaki about it anyway but she was really annoyed that her book wasn’t selling and she had put so much time and effort into it and it was really good and everything. Robert was like, “Yeah, I’ve got books too and I can’t really write very well to be honest about it but as long as people buy my books,” and she was like, “That’s just not fair, that’s crazy that if you’re not even into it, and …”

Anyway, Robert kind of smiled at her and picked up a copy of one of his books and he read what was written on the cover. He said, this says if you just read it with me. It says, number one best selling author, what it doesn’t say, he said to the lady, it doesn’t say number one best writing author. His point was that you won’t write the best selling book just because you’ve written the best written book there’s a little bit more to it than that.

It’s kind of the same with Merch by Amazon. If you are Picasso, if you are such an incredibly, seriously, insanely, inhumanly talented graphic designer, you’re actually not guaranteed to make money with Merch by Amazon because your work is a lot more suited to huge big pieces that you put on a wall that are ten feet high or something rather than doing little funny phrases on T-shirts about Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton or whatever it is that’s actually popular that people want to wear on t-shirts. Absolutely no, you do not need to be a a graphic designer. Okay, it helps if you know your way around some of the software programs but it’s not a necessity.
You know, yeah okay you might be able to throw up t-shirts a little bit quicker or something like that but definitely for the normal man, woman in the street no you don’t have to be a graphic designer. No, you don’t have to be familiar with a ton of different graphic design programs. It’s actually quite easy to get started, you can even use Apps on your phone to create designs if you want to. Then if you go into YouTube there’s so many different tutorials, really basic steps to get going with Photoshop or different programs like that that you can use as well.

Being a graphic designer is not a necessity, I guarantee you that most people who do this are not graphic designers, they’re just normal people like you and me. They just have jobs they’ve got families, they’re trying to work out a little bit of extra time so they can spend an hour or two on this every day. Maybe they want to save up to buy a house, maybe they want to pay off some bills, pay off student loans, they want to save up for a holiday, whatever it is, they’re just normal people that are just interested in doing something a little bit different to see if they can make this into a viable part time income which absolutely it can be. There’s no huge barriers to entry, you don’t have to be some kind of genius drawing crazy person or anything like that. Trust me, I’m proof of it.

I can show you some of my drawings but you’d just laugh at me so I probably won’t bother. That is it for this episode. Thanks so much for joining me. I’ll see you over on the Facebook group if you go to our website MerchEntrepreneur.com you can get the link to pop over there and see what’s happening. It’s definitely an exciting time to be an entrepreneur. This is honestly one of the most straightforward, most scalable and most passive, and I hesitate to say the word passive but you know I have been talking about Robert Kiyosaki and the whole idea of creating assets. You make it once and it sells most times. There’s a lot of that about Merch by Amazon. I think it’s just such a wonderful opportunity, low varied entry, really low costs and really regardless of where you are in the world you can make a stab at it.

That’s it for this episode. Thanks so much for listening and talk to you in the next episode.
